Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories
Illuminating the rich tapestry of Ngati Manuhiri’s history through light and sound

In the heart of Mahurangi, nestled within a pristine stretch of ngahere (native bush), a remarkable artistic creation comes to life, inviting all who encounter it to embark on a sensory journey through time. Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories is a captivating artwork delivered by Auckland Council Public Art and the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust with invaluable guidance and support from the Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights, reveals the storied history and enduring presence of the Ngāti Manuhiri people in this cherished region.

The installation by Hokimai-anahera Rosieur explores storytelling through a fusion of light and sound. Thirty-six LED lighting units and eight audio speakers sit among the trees along 160 metres of Mahurangi riverbank – across from Warkworth Wharf – creating groupings of sound, song and chromatic display.

From Kore to the Present: An Artistic Odyssey Through Time
Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories begins its narrative at a point that predates recorded history, at “kore” or “the nothingness.” It’s a profound starting point, symbolising the timeless origins of the universe itself. From there, Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories delves deep into the mythological tales of the indigenous people of Aotearoa, recounting the separation of Papatūānuku (Earth mother) and Ranginui (sky father). These foundational stories are brought to life through a mesmerising interplay of light and sound, creating a sense of awe and reverence.

As viewers continue along this journey, they are serenaded by the enchanting sounds of birds and the gentle flow of streams, all while immersed in the sacred incantations of te reo Māori. This section signifies the birth of a new era or age of the earth, drawing inspiration from Māori creation stories that speak to the profound connection between the land, the people, and the divine.

The Resonance of Ancestral Voices
Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories then moves seamlessly into a captivating exploration of traditional wind instruments (puoro), resounding haka (war cries), and the soothing sounds of the moana (ocean). These elements pay homage to the prominent tupuna (ancestors) who have left an indelible mark on this land over the past millennium. It’s a poignant tribute to the enduring legacy of Ngāti Manuhiri, a testament to their undisturbed occupation of this region throughout history.

The soundscape evolves further, weaving in the mournful notes of moteatea, sung laments that echo with the stories and sorrows of generations. Each note is a tribute to the voices of the past, preserving their memories and honouring their resilience.

Whakawatea: A Reverent Conclusion
The journey through time culminates in a powerful and poignant moment known as “Whakawātea”. This serves as a profound acknowledgment to all ancestors and descendants, a gesture of deep respect for the continuous chain of life and history that has shaped the Ngāti Manuhiri people and their enduring presence in Mahurangi.

Te Hokinga Mahara – A Collection of Memories is not just an artwork, it is a living tribute to the rich tapestry of Ngāti Manuhiri’s history, culture, and connection to this land. With its innovative use of programmable LED lights and speakers, viewers are taken on a transformative journey through time and memory, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege of experiencing it.
